IT systems must be built on a strong foundation
What challenges did you face when introducing a new DB monitoring solution?
We began our review in 2011 and completed implementation in 2012. The most difficult part was persuading DBAs. Real-time monitoring is a core part of their work, and even when they understood that performance was better, they were hesitant to move away from screens they had used for years. So we went through a customization process to make the screens feel familiar while moving to the new platform.
After adoption, we could identify and process failures and issues much faster, and DB performance analysis also improved. This led to better response speed and performance overall. Today, both IT teams and business users are satisfied with the adoption, and it is seen as delivering high ROI.
DB monitoring solutions are now applied to most internal IT back-office systems. The most actively used area is U Cube, where around 80% of reports are generated. We were impressed by how proactively Sherpasoft reviewed and reflected requirements, and by the technical support they provided across a wide range of DBMS environments, from commercial to open-source.
Do you have any IT infrastructure operation know-how?
Large-scale systems that must run 24 hours a day require immediate awareness and action when problems occur. Fast and appropriate response to incidents is one of the hardest parts of IT operations.
To do this well, operators need to continuously build knowledge and experience as IT keeps evolving. Above all, sound system design is critical. The architecture should match business purpose, and should also consider flexibility and scalability for expansion. Stable operation starts with designing the architecture correctly from the beginning.
